The hours blurred together as I danced and drank. A couple of friends from Ellie’s class had joined and I’d tried to meet up with Reggie, but we kept missing each other. The music was loud as ever and it seemed like there was an endless energy that sustained the dancers. My mouth was bitter and sticky from the beer and sweat was coating my back but the atmosphere was intoxicating. I was enjoying myself more than I expected, despite Ellie dancing with all sorts. She was never gone for very long and always returned. At times, it felt like we were circling each other like planets, pulling and pushing but never quite meeting.

“Joooo!” Someone threw their arm over my shoulder and pulled me in a hug.

“Reggie!” Excited to see her, we jumped up and down. We’d been trying to meet up all night and she wasn’t alone. A whole group of girls were pouring in, some of them more familiar than others.

I recognised Bab, she was easy to remember. Harper and her girlfriend. A couple others that I’d partied with who greeted me with the same enthusiasm like they’d known me for years but I couldn’t even remember their names. They didn’t seem to mind and neither did I. When it came to parties, you didn’t have to “know know” people.

Another arm swung over my other shoulder and Ellie pressed herself into me. “Who is this?”

“Ellie, this is Reggie!” I gestured between the two of them. “Reggie, this is Ellie.”

“Ahh, the best friend,” my classmate noted dryly. I didn’t know why she was saying it like that but it didn’t look like Ellie heard her.

Luckily. It was awkward enough having them both here, a new friend and an old one. Two different worlds colliding, even if I wasn’t ready for it yet.

The two of them stared at each other. Bemusement played in Reggie’s eyes while Ellie looked threatened and threatening. I hoped she wasn’t still worried that I was replacing her as my best friend.

I unwrapped myself out of both their embrace and held out my drink. “Let’s party!”

For a moment, I worried the two were going to start some kind of misguided fight but the beat of the music took over and both turned away, bobbing along.

I released the tense breath I’d been holding. That had not gone the way I’d wanted to. With my drink in hand, I studied both groups dancing near me. On the one side, Ellie and her classmates. A mix of boys and girls, a regular crowd that blended in with the mass. On the other side, Reggie and the Platypeople. Almost all women except for a handful of guys, most of which were more feminine than the girls. They were wild and unconcerned, somehow managing to claim a lot of space. People stared at them but none of them cared. A whole world existed in their little circle, a world I wanted to be part of. I just wasn’t sure if I could ever be this kind of carefree.
